Abstract
The degradation of the 1-2-3 and 1-2-4 phases of the Y-Ba-Cu-O HTSC compound resulting from exposure to moisture has been investigated. An explanatory model is being proposed in the context of the micro-chemical and micro-structural alterations resulting from the surface reactivity of these phases. The roles of planar defects are shown to be of particular importance. Effective and lasting protection has been demonstrated by deposition of an organic overlayer of monolayer thickness. The process is compatible with present and prospective fabrication technologies, and is particularly relevant for the protection of thin-film devices
